Fire is in its 4th consecutive day, according to ICMBio; it is still unknown whether the fire was caused and how it started
A fire in Chapada dos Veadeiros, in northeastern Goiás, destroyed around 10,000 hectares of the national park. According to ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation), the fire started on Thursday (September 5, 2024). Earlier, 2 planes from the institute were sent to help fight the fire.
According to ICMBio, which manages Chapada dos Veadeiros, one of the fire fronts is expanding and reaching areas of great ecological importance for Chapada. “Due to the rugged terrain, the available aircraft cannot operate on this front”he said in a statement. The operation awaits the arrival of a support helicopter this Monday (9th September).
The flames in Chapada dos Veadeiros started at Paralelo 14, where the G0-118 highway passes, connecting Alto Paraíso to the cities of Teresina de Goiás and Cavalcanti. On Saturday (7.set), traffic was interrupted in the area due to the smoke.

In videos on social media, firefighters from Backfire Network (Volunteer Brigade Network in Chapada dos Veadeiro) report greater difficulty in containing the fire, as the flames remain below ground and the area is flammable.
