Sedigas, the Spanish Gas Association, and its partners have presented a decalogue of commitments and good practices for the development and operation of biomethane production plants in Spain, highlighting the fundamental role of this renewable gas in the energy transition. This energy vector, which is generated from organic waste, not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also promotes the circular economy.
Together with its partners, Sedigas is thus committed to transparency, dialogue and responsible collaboration in the promotion, deployment and operation of these facilities and the infrastructure necessary to deliver this renewable energy up to consumption points.
As highlighted by the gas employers’ association, this decalogue reflects the joint efforts of the industry and focuses its efforts on different key areas.
Among them, the need they point to in order to give transparency in the value chain, by ensuring that biomethane is produced and distributed under high standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility, keeping society informed in a clear and accessible way.
On the other hand, they advocate the need to promote an active collaboration with public administrations, local communities and other interest groups, creating a space for mutual understanding and adaptation to the needs of the projects and the social reality of the environment.
Joan Batalla Bejerano, president of Sedigashas highlighted that this technology is an “essential” solution for the decarbonization and energy transition of Spain. “Our partners not only support its deployment from a technical perspective, but are fully committed to transparency, social dialogue and responsible collaboration, ensuring that benefits of this technology reach the entire society“he concluded.
Spain has great potential to lead the deployment of biomethane in Europe. The country has the capacity to generate up to 163 TWh of biomethane per yearwhich would cover 50% of the territory’s natural gas demand. This development would not only contribute to reducing emissions, but would also boost the local economy, mobilizing investments of up to 40,500 million euros and generating more than 60,000 jobs??
