Security policy US sends about 2,000 troops to Europe in addition to the former – Pentagon: Troops will not fight in Ukraine

Sending troops is mostly a symbolic gesture. The United States already has more than 60,000 troops in Europe.

The United States president Joe Biden decided on Wednesday to send 2,000 new troops to Europe due to the escalating situation in Ukraine, news agencies say.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, two thousand new troops will be sent from the United States to be deployed in Germany and Poland. In addition, about a thousand American troops are being transferred from Germany to Romania.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense John Kirby said it was a “temporary” deployment of troops. He did not want to specify in his briefing when the troops could be returned to the United States.

Although the decisions to send troops relate to the threat posed by Russia to Ukraine, Kirby said “these troops will not fight in Ukraine”, news channel CNN reports.

Wednesday The 3,000 soldiers mentioned in the announcement are not among the approximately 8,500 soldiers announced by the United States in January to be ready for deployment if needed in Europe, Reuters reports.

U.S. announcements are mostly symbolic, especially because the U.S. has not pledged to fight alongside Ukraine if Russia invades the country. Ukraine is not a member of the NATO Alliance and therefore has no security guarantees due to its members.

However, additional troops are welcome in the more eastern members of NATO, where Russian action is feared to escalate into a larger war.

The United States already has more than 60,000 troops in Europe, more than half of whom are in Germany. It is about a fifth compared to the end times of the Cold War.

The United States Russia has deployed about 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border. In addition, the United States accused at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday that Russia is aiming to increase its troops in Belarus to about 30,000 in the near future.

According to the West, the soldiers in Belarus could also be used in the attack on Ukraine.

Russia denies American estimates of troop numbers and the country’s preparations for an attack on Ukraine.

Russia in December, demanded that NATO commit itself to stopping enlargement to new members and reducing troops and armaments in NATO’s eastern member states. NATO has announced that it will keep its doors open to new members, and troops have recently been added to NATO’s eastern edge, in addition to which the United States and European countries are providing armed assistance to Ukraine.

Russia believes the United States and NATO are acting aggressively and pushing Europe to the brink of war. Russia also announced that it would visit Finland earlier this week in its letter that it was “seriously concerned about the growing politico-military tensions in the immediate vicinity of its western borders”.
