Military alliance NATO’s highest decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council, will visit Finland on Monday and Tuesday.

This is a historic event, as the Council has never been to Finland before. The President of the Council is the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg.

Also foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (green) and the Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd) meet both the Stoltenberg and the North Atlantic Council.

Stoltenberg and the NATO ambassadors in Helsinki have a close program, which includes, for example, a visit to Parliament, an acquaintance with the Guards Jaeger Regiment and the activities of the European Center of Expertise for Combating Hybrid Threats.

Also the Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (Central), Commander of the Defense Forces Timo Kivinen, Speaker of Parliament Anu Vehviläinen (Central) and Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo (green) meet guests.

This is the first time that the North Atlantic Council has arrived in Finland. From Finland, Stoltenberg and the Council will continue their journey tomorrow to Sweden, which, like Finland, will work closely with NATO.

Finland became a strengthened partner of NATO in 2014. This has made it possible, among other things, for Finland to participate in the planning of some selected NATO exercises.

The visit provides an opportunity for NATO to discuss at a high level the security situation in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region.
