Macron also said Wednesday he plans to keep in touch with the Russian president Vladimir Putin and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr to Zelensky.

Macron said on Wednesday it was concerned about what was happening at the Ukrainian border.

“For me, the most important thing about Ukraine and the dialogue with Russia is to ease the situation and find political ways out of the crisis,” Macron said.

Last week, the French president described Russia as acting as a force for imbalances in the region but underlined that it was nevertheless ready for dialogue to clarify the situation.

He has emphasized in recent years that Europe should keep its channels open to Russia. According to him, even a demanding dialogue with Russia is more desirable than an open confrontation.

In recent months, the war has once again raised the headlines of Russia’s actions on the border with Ukraine. Russia has assembled an estimated 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, and Western countries have warned Russia of a new invasion of Ukraine. Russia has denied any intentions to attack.

On Thursday, early in Finnish time, the White House said that US President Joe Biden and Macron had agreed on the phone to coordinate their response to Russia’s actions on the Ukrainian border.

Among other things, during the call, the leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and assessed their joint efforts in diplomacy and the preparation of possible economic sanctions against Russia.

Russia has contributed in recent months to binding promises from the West that NATO will no longer be allowed to expand east. This week, Russia sent a letter to a number of Western countries accusing, among other things, the West of selecting OSCE treaties only for their respective shares and disregarding the obligations agreed between the member states of the organization.

The United States provided written responses to Russia’s security assurance requirements in late January. According to Russia’s letter this week, the answers show that there are serious differences between the countries’ perceptions of equal and indivisible security.
