Security Facebook says it will stop using facial recognition technology in its service

At the same time, the company announced that it will delete the database it used for identification, which contains data from more than a billion people.

Technology company Facebook has announced that it will stop using facial recognition technology on its Facebook service, company says.

The technology has been visible to users, for example, by automatically retrieving information about other users in the images they upload to the service. This information has included the names of the people in the pictures.

In the process the company announced that the so-called Automatic Alt Text (AAT) service for the visually impaired and blind will be reduced. In the future, texts created using AAT around images will not contain the names of the people in the images, but the service will otherwise work normally.

Facebook justifies the decision with questions floating around privacy.

“We need to balance the positive uses of facial recognition with growing societal concerns, especially as regulators have not set clear rules [teknologian käytölle], ”The company’s press release says.

About technology in connection with the waiver, Facebook announced that it plans to delete more than a billion user data from its databases. The information relates to, among other things, the faces and facial features of the users.

According to a Facebook spokesman interviewed by the news agency Reuters, the waiver applies to all Facebook users. The spokesman estimates that the removal of the technology will be completed by December.

Facebook announced last week that it would change its name. The new name of the company is Meta. The company has also been the subject of harsh accusations in recent weeks. For example The New York Times has told how a former employee of the company has revealed how the company has allegedly put financial performance above the well-being of users.
