“I am convinced that the sanctioning and repressive tools must be accompanied by a great educational and social prevention moment”
“I believe that we need to work on a strategic plan at multiple levels, one local and one broader, national in scope. We must defend our cities, our squares, reclaiming the spaces for aggregation that cannot be left at the mercy of those who consider themselves the criminal masters of those places, which instead belong, unequivocally, to our communities”. The Undersecretary of the Interior Nicola Molteni (Lega) explains ad Affaritaliani.it what does the Interior Ministry intend to do to guarantee safety in the cities, particularly after the mega-brawl in Cantù.
Undersecretary Molteni, what do the bloody events in Cantù tell us?
“What happened in Cantù, similarly to other places in Italy, highlights that there is an enormous problem of youth crime linked mainly, but not only, to subjects of the so-called “second generations”, i.e. Italians of foreign origin who, with criminal behavior and with the use of knives and blades, they fuel insecurity and social alarm in large and medium-sized cities. This of even unstructured baby gangs is becoming the first crime phenomenon in our territories. Sometimes very young people, minors, who pour hatred and anger into our streets with aggression and violence. This is the symbol of the failure of the much vaunted, and never implemented, integration called for on the left. This is why blocking and combating illegal immigration becomes essential. This year we are at 60% less landings compared to 2023, a positive figure. The risk I see otherwise is the Parisian banlieues, real ghettos of illegality and social tension that generate delinquency. The events in Cantù are very serious, unacceptable, three fellow citizens stabbed without a triggering reason. I met the father of one of the three boys, fortunately their conditions are improving and they are out of danger. Crime is responded to with the presence of the State, with the force of the law, zero tolerance and no impunity for the guilty. Let’s look at Cantù: just over fifteen hours after the events, thanks to the work of the investigators and the police and an efficient video surveillance system, three suspects were already in custody and a fourth was close to turning himself in. All four have now been handed over to their country’s prisons. The following day, in the Prefecture in Como, a Provincial Committee for order and security was convened which I chaired with the Prefect Andrea Polichetti who adopted immediate response solutions from the State starting from the strengthening of surveillance and control of the territory and of that square.”
What does the Government intend to do to ensure such serious incidents do not happen again?
“I believe that we need to work on a strategic plan at multiple levels, one local and one broader, national in scope. We must defend our cities, our squares, reclaiming the meeting spaces that cannot be left at the mercy of those who consider themselves the criminal masters of those places, which instead belong, unequivocally, to our communities. That square in Cantù is a place of sociality, of aggregation, a symbol of the work of our land, and this reasoning can be extended to all the squares and streets of our country. Anyone who tarnishes these community heritages of ours has no citizenship rights and cannot aspire to any type of impunity. The Government, since its inauguration, has posed the issue of protecting the rule of law and safeguarding the safety of our cities, whether small or large, as a fundamental commitment. After years of cuts made by previous governments, with the first budget law we allocated 100 million per year for 10 years to a structured hiring plan in the Police Force to make up for retirements and staff shortages; 1.5 billion euros found to redefine the contractual situation of the Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and Army; 1,800 soldiers relocated to guard roads and stations with the “Safe Roads” operation. Here too nothing was done lightly”.
Do you think this is enough?
“I consider this response from the Government and the Interior Ministry to be powerful and a great break with the economies that the left has practiced in recent years. However, I am convinced that the sanctioning and repressive instruments must be accompanied by a great educational and social prevention moment, which makes more responsible and valorises some educational agencies of primary importance such as the school, in its varied articulations, or like the oratories, whose social function of aggregation is still fundamental for the growth of future generations. We therefore need an integrated intervention plan capable of tackling the phenomena linked to youth distress, before this can transform into youth crime or, in the worst case scenario, into that perverse form of association typical of youth gangs. The Interior Ministry is ready to do its part, because it is aware that security and legality have no political color, but are inalienable rights of every citizen of this country”.
