The second dose of vaccine against Covid-19 increases antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 by 10 times, but six months later there is an eight-fold decrease in these antibodies induced by vaccination, concluded a study by the National Institute of Health ( INSA), from Portugal, released this Tuesday (22).
According to the survey, which followed 132 INSA professionals vaccinated and/or previously infected with the coronavirus, about six months after complete primary vaccination, there was an “eight-fold decrease in antibodies induced by covid-19 vaccination, this being less marked decrease for antibodies capable of neutralizing the virus”.

“We demonstrated that the first dose of the vaccine provoked an immune response, although a second dose was essential to promote binding and neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies,” according to the research findings.
INSA developed this study involving health professionals from the institute with the aim of comparing data regarding specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 after vaccination against covid-19.
The results of this work, now published in the scientific journal Vaccines, “confirm the existence of different titers of binding and neutralizing antibodies over time”, says the institute, considering that the research “thus allowed us to contribute to scientific knowledge in Covid-19 area”.
According to the institute, the research will continue until the professionals involved in the study complete the 12 months since vaccination, which will allow a better assessment of the correlation between binding antibodies and neutralizing antibodies of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
This monitoring will also allow the assessment of immunity induced by the booster dose administered to professionals participating in the study.
The INSA researchers recognize that the study has some limitations, since the universe of participants included only healthy and active workers, without serious comorbidities and under 70 years of age.
