There are many unknowns in the pilot’s future Sebastian Montoya, His dream and objective has been the same for years: to be the first Colombian to win the championship Formula 1 World Cup.
According to the criteria of
But to achieve this, you must first get a position in the Formula 2 (the penultimate step for the ‘Great Circus) for next season, a challenge that is not in his hands, it is in those of his father and manager, the pilot Juan Pablo Montoya.
The goal is clear, but…
Sebastián had a year that went from less to more, it started with many problems, but he straightened the path a little in the final stretch to finish in 17th place in the World Cup with 40 points.
He always had the mentality and showed that he is made to make the jump in category, after the second place obtained in the mythical Spa-Francorchampsin what was a relief for him, his team and his family.
The question is whether he is going to get a seat in Formula 2, he has the speed, but those millionaire resources that the ‘big circus’ always demands are missing because talent alone is not enough. Juan Pablo, his father, pointed out that around 2.6 million euros are needed (more than 12,000 billion Colombians), the dialogues to find a team are still open because Formula 2 ends in December.
In a dialogue with THE TIME, Sebastián Montoya spoke about the possibility of racing in Formula 2, but with less certainty than in previous interviews. In addition, he left the door open to go to another category.
Will Sebastian race in F2 next year?
With speed there is the possibility of a Formula 2 seat. The speed we have is enough, but we have to look to see what happens.
What do you need to get the chair?
A lot of money. My dad already said a figure that is 2.2 or 2.6 million euros, but when there are people who want to pay 3 million euros one does not compete. There are many people who want to see me in Formula 1, but they don’t support me. The people who support me are making a difference and giving me that opportunity to be racing and, I hope to still fulfill my dream of racing in Formula 1 and being world champion, I have worked hard and I want to continue improving.
Is there a possibility of seeing Sebastián Montoya in other categories?
I hope not, but the opportunities we have are quite good… We are there, waiting. That’s what I want (to compete in Formula 2), but if that doesn’t happen, one also needs to have a plan B. I hope it happens. We are in that, not much has happened and we are in that process.
Can this year’s results affect?
I closed the season very well, with one of the best races I have done in Formula 3 and in my career. I am very happy because it left a lot of learning behind. At first, it was quite difficult. I know that I am ahead at the level I am at, I know that I should win and fight for the championship.
If you don’t find a seat, do you stay in Formula 3?
I don’t know. I trained this year for Formula 2, I understood the physical part quite well. The F3 was like with one hand, that’s how easy it was. I have to keep learning, there are things that are missing. I hope a door opens.
