Search continues for missing from floods in central Italy

The firefighters and Civil Protection teams continued, without success, throughout the night the search for the three missing persons, including an 8-year-old boy, after the floods that occurred in the Marche region, in the center of Italy. These have caused 10 fatalities, enormous damage and the loss of their homes by several hundred people.

The Government delegation in Ancona confirmed last night the tenth victim so three people are still missing: an 8-year-old boy, a 56-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man from the town of Arcevia, who was swept away while in his car by the flooding of the Misa River.

Teams of firefighters from other regions of the country are working tirelessly to help the displaced and people whose homes are uninhabitable by water and mud, as well as to free roads of tree trunks carried by the water.

At the moment, there are 150 homeless people, most of them in Sinigaliabut the number will grow during the days as many stayed at the homes of family and friends.

It was also reported that in the last few hours the water supply that had been cut off in many of these towns has been resumed. The Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, visited the affected areas this Friday and expressed closeness to the populations, in addition to the announcement of the declaration of a state of emergency and the arrival of the first 5 million aid.

“It is a disaster. we will do our best”, he said during a visit to Pianello di Ostra, the town that recorded the greatest damage and 4 fatalities. Today the biggest concern is about the weather, as a new wave of bad weather is expected and a yellow alert status has been decreed throughout the Marche region.

In the province of Ancona “400 mm of rain fell in two or three hours, half of what it rains in a year in the Region. It was an extremely intense event. Probably the heat of these days, colliding with a cell of cold air, has caused such violent phenomena,” the experts explained.
