Sean Penn is officially on the field in Ukraine to record and film a documentary about the invasion by Russia. Confirmation comes from Vice Studios: Oscar-winning actor appeared at a press conference this Thursday in Kievas he listened to government officials talk about the crisis.
It is not the first time that Sean Penn has gone to the country: already in November 2021 he had gone there to prepare his documentary by visiting the local military (photos of him were released together with the Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation Press Service). Newsweek wrote on its pages:
Sean Penn visited the President’s Office and spoke with Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, as well as some local journalists and members of the Ukrainian military. The director came to Kiev to record all the events that are happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about the invasion of Russia. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine. Our nation is grateful to him for his display of courage and honesty. Sean Penn is showing courage that many others lack, particularly in comparison to Western politicians. The more people like him – true friends of Ukraine, who support the struggle for freedom – the faster we can stop this invasion of Russia.
Sean Penn has been the focus of many humanitarian and antiwar operations over the years. In 2020 he produced a documentary, Citizen Penn, which chronicles the actor’s work in creating the non-profit organization Community Organized Relief Effort, known as CORE, in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake. CORE has also assisted various teams in testing and vaccinating people for COVID. The original documentary focused on Donbass, but in all likelihood now the focus of production will shift towards today’s invasion that is destabilizing all of Europe.
