Seagate, one of the leading companies in the production of hard drives has recently renewed its product line, offering hardware ready to meet every need of gamers and users. One of these is the Seagate Game Drive 5TB Halo Master Chief Limited Edition, the protagonist of our review.
The Hard disk in question is designed and built to be compatible with the flagship of Microsoft Xbox Series X and its younger sister Series S. Being plug and play, without power supply, therefore, the Game Drive can be connected to any device, whether a last generation console or home PC. The Californian company has definitely focused on versatility, creating a comfortable hardware for all budgets, literally.
But let’s go in order and begin to describe the Seagate HDD starting from the aesthetics. The Game Drive is compact, with small dimensions designed to be carried with you without any hindrance, easily stowed in a backpack pocket. The dimensions stand at 12.25 x 8.1 x 2.15 cm for a total weight of just over 250 grams, one of the smallest on the market considering the storage space of 5 TB. This particular Halo Infinite branded edition is also available in a smaller cut, or 2 TB, an evolution compared to the previous model screen-printed with the famous Spartan presented last year.
Unlike the latter which was presented in black color, the Seagate Game Drive 5TB Halo Master Chief Edition sports the military green that made John 117’s armor iconic, recalling the current version of Halo Infinite with a print of the number in White. On the narrow rear frame there is also a LED strip, the hallmark of the new lines of Seagate hard drives, in this case RGB which replaces the classic green light. The coloring can also be changed both in intensity, pattern and color using a tool that can be easily downloaded from the official website, and no, unfortunately it does not integrate with Razer Chroma.
Being a self-powered Hard Disk, on the body there are only the cable input cable, USB 3.2 output, and a small white LED that indicates the power on status, which will flash during transfers. Speaking of the latter, we tested the speed of this small storage device, both in the process of reading and writing to the disk. The little guy from Seagate on a 1 GB write test scores a speed of 141.85 MB / s, while for writing it reaches 133.58 MB / s. Not being in the presence of an SSD, the timing falls within a standard range for current technology, in line with all other new generation Seagate products even in the case of larger capacities.
Hardware companies therefore continue to invest in mechanical technology despite the advent of NVME which is gaining ground thanks to the high performance it can guarantee. In the current scenario of the IT market, especially for gaming, it is now customary to find configurations that see PCs with SSDs equipped by default and a medium / large size HDD in support to ensure abundant storage space.
This speech is completely feasible even for consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X / S equipped with internal SSD of modest size. With the increase in the weight of the games, the basic space available is quite meager and therefore the need arises to combine a storage memory to have all the content you want at your fingertips. The limitation, as we all know by now, lies in having to necessarily connect a compatible SSD in terms of reading speed.
Prices at the moment are not yet completely affordable and the capacity is certainly not advantageous when compared to the HDDs that have accompanied us in recent years. To intercept this type of request, Seagate has decided to offer its users an all-round range of products, finding the right balance between portfolio and performance. While it is true that the Seagate Game Drive 5TB Halo Master Chief Limited Edition cannot play Xbox Series X / S titles, this small device is capable of storing around twenty large games and guarantees adequate transfer speeds. on console in order to natively play the contents.
This particular edition pays the brand it carries, and with the current price fluctuations it stands at € 199.99, certainly not cheap when compared to the 1TB Seagate Expansion Card for Xbox Series X | S currently available at a price of 229.99 €. The trade-off that the user has to make is therefore based on the type of performance they want to achieve and choose whether to sacrifice space or speed for console use.
Net of these considerations, the Seagate Game Drive 5TB Halo Master Chief Limited Edition is a satisfying and useful hardware for its versatility. During writing and reading there is no audible noise except the sound of the head, almost imperceptible if we do not bring the HDD close to the ear. Even in terms of temperatures, there are no noteworthy changes in heat, and a more intense heat can only be found with prolonged use. In our case we left the HDD connected to Series X all day, moving the contents and playing them directly from it, and at the end of the day there was not an excessive degree of temperature either on the device or on the surface on which it was placed.
The Seagate Game Drive 5TB Halo Master Chief Limited Edition may not be the best performing HDD on the market, nor the cheapest, but the small size and speed with which large content can be moved are by far a point in its favor. Just think that in our tests we transferred the very heavy Microsoft Flight Simulator and Call of Duty: Warzone in less than 15 minutes each. Also not to be overlooked is the successful design inspired by Master Chief’s Mjolnir and the accompanying RGB strip, which make it unique and characteristic.
