The number one in the world ranking of golfers, the American Scottie Scheffler, showed a lot of coolness this Friday, when appearing for the second round of the PGA Championship after having been detained by the Louisville (Kentucky) Police following a traffic incident .
Scheffler was not only very calm on the court, but he also delivered an extraordinary card of 66 strokes, five under par, to remain with -9, two behind the leader in the clubhouse, his compatriot Collin Morikawa, and waiting for what the leader of the first day, Xander Schauffele, does in the afternoon.
As reported by the AFP agency, Scheffler was handcuffed after trying to evade a traffic stop when he was on his way to play the second round of the tournament, which is played at the Valhalla Golf Club. Shortly before, a traffic accident had occurred in which one person died and in which the player was not involved.
Scheffler was released on personal recognizance and the start of the second round of the PGA Championship was delayed one hour and 20 minutes.
This is how Scottie Scheffler spoke about his arrest
“I was so shocked by what was happening that I didn’t stop shaking for a while. “This morning I relied a lot on my team to have the right mind to play,” added the golfer, who also expressed his condolences to the victim of the traffic accident that caused the incident that he described as “a misunderstanding.”
“I was lucky to get out in time to play golf. I actually don’t have to change the chip because it was a misunderstanding. I was trying to get to the club to play a round of golf and get ready. My main focus after being arrested was to prepare to come play, luckily I was able to do that. I had a good round,” he explained.
Scheffler, who has just become a father and has therefore not played tournaments for three weeks, wants to put what happened behind him. “I’m going to get back to my normal routine. I may go to practice this afternoon depending on my energy levels after eating. Go to the gym…Continuing to get my heart rate down and get ready for a long weekend,” he insisted.
Earlier, before the round, Scheffler also spoke about what happened. “I was doing what the officers told me to do. It was a chaotic situation, and it is understandable if you take into account the tragic accident that had occurred before. There was a big misunderstanding about what I thought they were asking me to do,” he said. “It was never my intention to disobey any orders,” he added.
