Drinking coffee or tea can help reduce the risks of stroke and dementia. Such conclusions were made by scientists from Tianjin Medical University after a large-scale study involving more than 365 thousand people. Its results are published in the journal PLOS Medicine November 16.
“Our results showed that moderate consumption of coffee and tea, alone or in combination, was associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia,” the experts said.
Dr. Yuan Zhang and colleagues from Tianjin Medical University monitored 365,682 people recruited from 2006 to 2010 until 2020. At the very beginning, the participants independently reported their coffee and tea consumption. During the study period, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 had at least one stroke.
People who drank either 2-3 cups of coffee, or 3-5 cups of tea a day, or 4-6 cups of both coffee and tea had the lowest incidence of stroke or dementia. People who drank 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea daily had a 32% lower risk of stroke and a 28% lower risk of dementia compared to those who drank neither coffee nor tea. Coffee consumption alone or in combination with tea was also associated with a lower risk of post-stroke dementia, the researchers found.
Earlier, on November 10, British nutritionist Frankie Phillips announced a decrease in the likelihood of type 2 diabetes with constant consumption of coffee. Moreover, the total amount of caffeine should not exceed 400 mg per day.
At the end of October, MedicalXpress published the conclusions of a group of scientists from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich on the mechanism of the effect of green tea on the human body. They found that green tea polyphenols do not suppress the oxidative process, but initiate it.
