Nature: Scientists have found a dried-up branch of the Nile River near the Pyramids of Giza
Scientists have found a dried-up branch of the Nile River near the pyramids at Giza, possibly explaining the mystery of their construction. About it reports Nature.
Now the pyramids are located several tens of kilometers from the Nile River, but Egyptologists previously believed that the Nile was once closer to them. Now, satellite imagery and geological data have confirmed that a tributary of the Nile, which researchers have named the Ahramat Branch, was used several thousand years ago near many of the region’s major sites.
Scientists believe that this discovery may help explain why the ancient Egyptians built pyramids in the chosen location – the river could have been used to transport building materials. They also came to the conclusion that the Nile had previously been prone to migration, which is why the people inhabiting its banks had to move after the river. It is known that over the past few hundred years the Nile has moved several kilometers to the east.
