However, injecting additional copies of this protein into the bloodstream of an infected person will help neutralize the virus. “The added receptors, like antibodies, will bind the spines of the coronavirus and prevent it from attacking our cells. We literally catch the virus with live bait, “he explained. Tyshkovsky noted that experiments on human cells and tissues have confirmed this hypothesis.
In addition, ACE2 breaks down the hormone angiotensin II, which triggers a cytokine storm. The introduction of additional copies of the protein to the patient will help reduce the level of this hormone and, as a result, suppress the inflammatory process and alleviate the course of the disease, the scientist noted. “ACE2 really shows great promise as a new drug against coronavirus infection,” Tyszkowski stressed, adding that the practical benefits of this method will become clear only based on the results of clinical trials.
