Gerhard Schröder and Putin – that was always a special relationship. Schröder’s wife is now causing a stir with an Instagram post about the Ukraine conflict.
Hanover – The German ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder* has always had a good relationship with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. In the final phase of his chancellorship (1998 to 2005) he laid the foundation stone for the Russian-German gas pipeline Nord Stream 1, shortly afterwards he became chairman of the supervisory board at Nord Stream AG, and he now has several jobs in the Russian gas industry. A typical male friendship always connected him with Putin.
Gerhard Schröder has now completely withdrawn from politics, but Vladimir Putin is still the Russian President – and for weeks has been scaring almost the entire world with aggression against Ukraine, which he would like to incorporate at least in parts into Russia. An invasion of the Russian army in the Ukraine is feared almost every day.
Gerhard Schröder: Dubious comments on the Ukraine conflict cause trouble
And Schroeder? He recently caused dissatisfaction with statements. Among other things, he accused Ukraine of “saber rattling” towards Russia because the country was demanding weapons for defense from the international community. The current chancellor, Olaf Scholz, even felt compelled to comment on the statements made by his predecessor: “He doesn’t speak for the government. He doesn’t work for the government. He’s not the government. I am now the chancellor. And the policies are the ones you hear from me.”
BND had already warned of Putin’s plan in the video
Since then it has been quiet about Schröder. But now his wife So-yeon Schröder Kim has commented on her husband’s role in the Ukraine conflict on the Instagram internet platform. There she published a post that she deleted shortly afterwards. But too late – other users had already taken a screenshot and shared it on the Twitter discussion platform.
Gerhard Schröder: Wife comments on Instagram about the Ukraine conflict
Se-yon Schröder-Kim writes about the current Ukraine conflict: “Many people have contacted me to ask whether my husband could talk to Mr. Putin about the Ukraine crisis. That would only work if the federal government wanted it seriously. But that cannot be assumed.”
The comments on Schröder’s wife’s words ranged from disbelief to malicious: “A shame for you social democracy” and “world politics from the living room”, write Twitter users. The CDU member of the Bundestag Matthias Hauer also shared the words of Schröder-Kim and commented: “The Schröder couple of course sees the mistake in the federal government”.
Gerhard Schröder: Others would also like to have him as a negotiator with Putin in the Ukraine conflict
However, Schröder’s wife is not the only one who has brought the former chancellor into play as a mediator in the Ukraine-Russia conflict: left-wing politician Gregor Gysi has already made this suggestion. The foreign policy spokesman for the left-wing faction said in a panel discussion in the mirror– Talk show “Top Talk”, Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel should negotiate with Putin on behalf of the federal government in order to find a diplomatic solution.
The FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, who discussed with Gysi in the group, found this proposal absurd: Schröder was “the biggest lobbyist under the sun,” she criticized. SPD Minister Karl Lauterbach also gave an explosive “impression” of Schröder on Wednesday. (smu)
