Parents, teachers and school principals face a difficult task. Getting students safely through the pandemic is becoming increasingly difficult.
Munich – The fourth corona wave has Germany firmly under control. The teachers’ association is also concerned about the ever increasing incidence. President Heinz-Peter Meidinger now warned welt.de before a “loss of control” in the school sector. In the hotspots it is sometimes no longer possible to maintain contact tracing. “We no longer know how to contain outbreaks of infection in schools,” he said. The school administrators themselves cannot order a quarantine, the authorities can no longer follow up, according to Meidinger.
In addition, according to Meidinger, there are federal states in which only infected people are sent home in quarantine. 200,000 students were still in quarantine last year, although the number of infections was much lower at the time. Now there are only 100,000 students in quarantine – despite increasing numbers. Many parents complain that only the sick child is sent home, which is why further infections occur later.
Mask requirement in schools tipped too early?
You have to find a middle ground. In Meidinger’s view, air filters and ventilation options keep the infection rate low, but “just sending the infected child home without an air filter, without minimum distance regulations and without a mask is negligent,” he emphasized. He does not understand that it is not mandatory to wear a mask in classrooms in all federal states. This does not unnecessarily torment the students either. “The kids deal with it much more coolly than many outside adults think,” Meidinger continues. Bavaria, for example, initially tipped the mask requirement in schools, but then reintroduced it.
It is also necessary that more students get vaccinated than before, because the current four of eleven million over 12-year-olds vaccinated are not enough. In addition, not enough teachers are being boosted yet. Meidinger is in favor of prioritizing teachers for third-party vaccinations.
Michael Piazolo also gives an overview of Corona. “The situation is serious,” said Piazolo. The situation is viewed with great concern. Now we have to act together. In Bavaria you do everything you can currently. Much, however, has to be decided at the federal level. You will then react quickly to the decisions from Berlin in Bavaria. Not everyone in the population is aware of the seriousness of the situation. “The fourth wave is one that exceeds the other waves in terms of speed and extent”. It won’t be an easy winter for sure.
Teachers and school principals complain: Too few corona measures in schools
Sven Stötzer, head of the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Erfurt, shows up in conversation with the mirrors concerned. “We had more positive cases than ever before the autumn break,” he says. There were also more and more cases among the teachers, although they were all double vaccinated. School administrators can often no longer guarantee that classrooms and gyms are as hygienically clean as the pandemic would require.
He found air filter systems useful, but the school authority, the city of Erfurt, decided against purchasing them. Ventilation must be enough, they said.
More and more children are increasingly neglecting hand washing, reports Anke Staar, chairwoman of the state parents’ conference in North Rhine-Wetfalen. An increasing sense of normality leads to negligence. There is a general lack of everything. Too little soap, towels, disinfectant and time are there to safely care for the students, summarizes the Erfurt school principal. (jv)
