School|New winds are blowing in the life of Tuomas Raja, known from Yle’s athletics broadcasts.
Yleisradio a well-known athletics expert Tuomas Raja is about to retire from his position as the principal of Pohjois-Haaga co-educational school (Phyk).
Phyk is one of the most significant sports schools in Finland in terms of sports junior high school and sports high school.
Raja’s retirement is evident from the job application submitted by the city of Helsinki, where the school is looking for a new principal for an employment relationship valid until August 1, 2025.
Raja has a long career behind him at Pohjois Haaga co-educational school, but now he says the time is right to step aside from the school’s activities.
“I’m still there until next summer. Then it will already be 40 years and 7 months in the service of this house, so isn’t there already quite a lot of work for one guy”, Raja laughs.
Raja says the official retirement date is July 31, 2025. He leaves his position as principal with a good feeling.
“Now it’s time to pass the baton on to the next one. The house is in good hands and I am happy to leave the position of principal,” states Raja.
“I feel that I’m in a really good position and now is a good time to leave, since I haven’t dragged myself all the way to the famous pipe,” he adds.
Limit has worked as Yle’s athletics expert in addition to the position of principal for several years. He emphasizes that even though the work ends at the co-ed school, there is still much more to do in life.
“I’m not going to pretend to be a pensioner here. We agreed [Ylen kanssa] always one year at a time about the continuation, but initially I have understood that [asiantuntija] things will continue there in the future. I’m happy to do that work,” says Raja.
Raja states that taking care of his own physical condition is an important part of his life after retirement. He says that he found a passion for orienteering.
“If you go to the gym to orientate for two full hours, you will quickly notice that it will be a hard workout. Orienteering is a big deal for me,” says Raja.
Raja says that PHYK’s teachers participate in Jukola’s relay and Venloje’s relay. He hopes that the rules could be interpreted differently in Jukola, so that he could continue to join the team.
“If I have enough knee strength, if only I could still represent my old school in Jukola’s relay”, Raja laughs.
