School canteens, the great forgotten

At some point we have lost the battle of school canteens. I do not know if due to the lack of use that has brought the day continues in many communities or why, but somehow we have resigned ourselves to the fact that there are no kitchens in the centers, that children eat precooked and heated food, to which From 12 years, in general, they lose de facto The right to dining room, that there are no scholarships, for concerted schools – which should be a public service – use them to finance.

Or, as we have known this week, that we know that one in three of those that still are offered a service as little nutritious improvable and the news goes completely unnoticed. Yes, at school or AMPA or initiatives are made, but the matter has been out of public policies.

Around a third of school canteens in Spain offer in their menus more fried and less vegetables than recommended: 29.15% of the centers include three or more fried rations a week and 37% serve two or less times fresh vegetables, according to the Last report of the National Food Chain Office of the Food Chain. Both issues are wrong: there are plenty of fried and vegetables are missing, according to all recommendations.

The report also points it to the idea that transferred you before: the dining room serves worse. An example among many is in the offer of drinks. This important is the dining room, and only with this fact it is difficult to understand that scholarships are scattered, as happens, attention, one million families. Or, better yet, that it is not directly a universal service, “an idea that is neither so crazy nor so ambitious,” one of the main experts in the field explained a while ago, Donald Bundy. You can think of few better things to invest and from here we will continue to insist on the importance of school canteens.

Of course, with all these basic problems we are not prepared to have the debate of whether a school must offer vegan alternatives in its menu. But we are not prepared (read the comments section of the article if you want to check it) does not mean that it is not happening.

  • Beyond these specific cases, it is worrying that these types of demonstrations are becoming more common in the university, which is no stranger to the ultra wave that Europe lives – and the species of need that their followers feel to proclaim it. Nor is it a matter of teachers only: a few days ago it was a group of students at the University of Oviedo who exhibited their racism by campus.
