Germany has a new chancellor after 16 years. December 8th was “special”, said the President of the Bundestag – and allowed something that was otherwise strictly forbidden.
Berlin – December 8, 2021 is a historic day in Germany: A Federal Chancellor was elected – after 16 years Angela Merkel (CDU) the new one is now Olaf Scholz (SPD). There are also a few peculiarities and anomalies on such a day. In the Bundestag, for example, a wave of selfies was suddenly kicked off.
The President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas (SPD) gave her permission to do so shortly before the election results were announced: “Normally, it is not allowed to take photos here in the hall during an ongoing session. But today is a special day, “said Bas and then caused a laugh in the hall:” And so that I don’t have to make 736 calls to order, I allow everyone to take photos for this day, all members of the parliament. “Suddenly there was even cheering in parliament , MPs clapped. “But please be discreet!” Laughed Bas too.
Discreetly, however, you can’t quite call what came after that. When it was clear that Scholz had been elected as the new Chancellor, more and more members of parliament took out their cell phones and took photos: Of themselves with Scholz, only of Scholz, of others – the main thing was that everything was recorded for eternity.
After the election, Scholz remains seated for the time being: “I said ‘yes'”
And one more situation shortly before that in the Bundestag was unusual: when Scholz was asked by the Bundestag President whether he would accept the election, he remained seated. On television, his answer could not be fully understood. When Bas repeated “That was loud and audible” and everyone clapped, the outcome was clear. In a tweet a short time later, Scholz also wrote: “I said ‘yes’.” Clarification ensued, one could say.
The fact that Scholz did not get up and did not use the microphone at the seat irritated some observers. It was different in the fourth election of ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel: In the middle between ex-Union parliamentary group leader Volker Kauder and CSU state group chairman Alexander Dobrindt, she got up, used the microphone and said “Yes, Mr. President, I’ll take this Choice on. ”Applause and standing ovations also followed.

Pick up certificates of appointment from Steinmeier – Lauterbach stands out
In the early afternoon, the new ministers also drove to Bellevue Palace to see Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to collect their certificates of appointment. The group picture shows faces beaming with joy. But one thing caught the eye here too: The new Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, was the only one who did not wear a tie – and neither did a bow tie, for which he was previously known. Due to the corona, the certificate of appointment was not handed over directly by the Federal President beforehand, but everyone was allowed to take it from a table.
Traffic light government can get started: Merkel soon again in the Bundestag
The new traffic light government can now get started, despite the small peculiarities everything went smoothly. Merkel is no longer Chancellor – but she will be in the Bundestag again in February: According to the dpa news agency, she has been nominated by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania CDU parliamentary group for the Federal Assembly that will elect the next Federal President.
