Here’s what you need to know about the 2022/2023 NFL season
Dusseldorf The 2022-23 NFL season starts in September. Who are the favourites? When and where is the Super Bowl held? And where are the games broadcast? We clarify the most important questions.
The new NFL season is about to begin. Hard tackles and spectacular catches are back on the agenda in September. Who are the favourites? Where are the games broadcast? And when is the Super Bowl? Here’s what you need to know about the new season.
The NFL begins its 103rd season on the night of September 8th to 9th, 2022 (Thursday to Friday). At 2:20 a.m. German time, the reigning Super Bowl champion, the Los Angeles Rams, welcomes the Buffalo Bills to the opening game. All other teams enter on the following Sunday and Monday.
The Los Angeles Rams are going into the new season as the current Superbowl champion as one of the favorites. However, whether they can repeat the success also depends on how the other teams in the league perform after the long football break. In addition to the Rams, the Buffalo Bills, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also top favorites.
Behind them there are several promising teams, but they can certainly compete with the four teams. There’s the Green Bay Packers, for example, who have always delivered in the regular season, but then weakened in the playoffs. The Cincinnati Bengals came close to the Super Bowl last year and still have the potential to finally win their first title in history. Likewise, teams like the Los Angeles Chargers or the Denver Broncos can cause one or the other surprise.
- AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets
- AFC North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers
- AFC South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans
- AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders
- NFC East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team
- NFC North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
- NFC South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks
Hence the NFL teams got their names.
The National Football League consists of 32 teams. These are divided into two conferences, each with 16 teams, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference is divided into four divisions with four teams each. The regular season consists of 18 game days, with each team having one day off (“bye week”). This means that each team has 17 games this season. Both a home and an away game will be played against each team in their own division. As part of the annual rotation, there are also four games against the teams in a division from their own conference and four games against the teams in a division from the opposing conference. In addition, there are two games (home and away) against the teams in their own conference that finished the previous year in the same place in the table (except for the division, which the team is already playing against due to the schedule). The 17th game this season is a game against another team from the other conference, which has occupied the same place in the table in its division. The division, which is played against anyway, is excluded, and there is also a rotation between the others.
The play-offs consist of 14 teams. In the AFC and the NFC, seven teams each make the play-offs. These are the winners of each division plus three so-called wild card teams per conference. The wild cards go to the three best teams in a conference that could not win their division. It is theoretically possible that all four teams from a division reach the play-offs.
The top seeded team from each of AFC and NFC will receive a bye, with the other six going head-to-head in the first round of the play-offs. The second-best teams in each conference play the seventh-best teams, the third-best teams play the sixth-place teams, and the fourth-ranked teams play fifth-place teams.
Each conference then determines its best team in the play-offs, so that in the end a team from the AFC plays with a team from the NFC in the Super Bowl for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
In the regular season, most games are played on Sundays (7 p.m., 10:05 p.m. and 10:25 p.m.). In addition, there is one game each on the night from Thursday to Friday (2.20 a.m.), on the night from Sunday to Monday (2.20 a.m.) and on the night to Tuesday (2.15 a.m.).
The Super Bowl LVI takes place on February 12, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals. There, the best AFC team and the best NFC team face each other and fight for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
The Pro Bowl is an event where the league’s best NFL players compete in games such as dodgeball or other disciplines. The Pro-Bowl concludes with a game between the NFC and the AFC. In recent seasons, however, the Pro Bowl has not attracted the attention that the organizers had hoped for. For this reason, an alternative is currently being sought.
