The 2024 World Superbike season is in full swing and in less than a week the engines will be revved up for the Misano round. However, the championship calendar was only made final today, with the announcement of the cancellation of the match in Hungary, which will be replaced by Estoril.
The production derivatives were ready to fly at Balaton Park, which would have been the scene of the Hungarian round on the weekend of 23 to 25 August. But the work to be done to host the event was not completed in time and, at least for this year, the Superbike World Championship will not go to Hungary.
Thus Estoril takes over, who will not play the match on the August weekend initially scheduled for Hungary. The Portuguese round, in fact, is postponed to the end of the season and will take place from 11 to 13 October, preceding the last round in Jerez. The Lusitanian event will thus become key for the fight for the title.
While no one has ever raced at Balaton Park, Estoril is a destination known for production derivatives, which have raced there for several years and to which they return after the 2022 edition. In the last edition held, Alvaro Bautista established himself in Race 1, while Superpole Race and Race 2 bear the signature of Jonathan Rea, who was riding the Kawasaki at the time. The six-time world champion himself has fond memories of Estoril, where in 2020 he won what is currently his last world title.
In addition to the Superbike, the World Supersport and the Women’s World Championships will also take to the track in the Estoril round, which will open the proceedings with its first historic race in Misano next week. The Portuguese track will also be the scene of the final round of the Yamaha R3 bLU cRU trophy.
