Superbike arrives in Portimao this weekend for the last European leg of the season. Before flying to Argentina and then to Asia, the pilots and teams will be in the old continent on one of the most popular but also challenging tracks. The ups and downs of the Algarve will also put a strain on the tires, which is why Pirelli is not unprepared and announces the compounds that will be adopted this weekend.
The track was resurfaced in 2020 to host Formula 1, but the grip is still not very good, so the sole tire supplier has decided to confirm the 2021 Superpole Race and qualifying choices. As for the front, there will be three in soft compound: we are talking about the standard SC1, the development SC1 in specification B0570 (SC1A) and the development SC1 A0764 (SC1B).
As for the rear, also in this case there will be three options and the choice can be made between the standard SC0 and the development SC0 B0624. In addition, there will be the SCX, which can only be used in qualifying and in the Superpole Race due to its characteristics.
Giorgio Barbier, Director of Motorcycle Sport Activities, says: “Portimão is undoubtedly one of the most iconic circuits on the calendar and, despite being a difficult track due to its ups and downs and blind curves, it is unquestionably one of the most fascinating and loved. by the pilots who can show their talent here. The choice of tires is not trivial because it is necessary to guarantee grip, of which the asphalt is scarce, but at the same time it is important to have a solution that can cope with the challenges that this track offers, therefore sufficiently protected even in the case of not very mild temperatures. to limit the possible appearance of graining “.
“Last year we saw that the rear options in SC0 compound certainly offer an advantage in long races while the SCX can have its say in the 10 lap distance. Much will also depend on the temperatures we find: at this time of the year there can be still warm but the proximity to the Atlantic can change climatic conditions rapidly ”, he concludes.
