Savonlinna fatal crash | Three young people died when a car drove into a pole and broke off – the accused denies that he was driving the car

In the accident, the car, which was not inspected and removed from traffic, hit a pole and broke in two. The accused was also seriously injured in Turma.

Prosecutor demands unconditional imprisonment for a man in his twenties who, according to the prosecutor, caused the death of three people of the same age in Savonlinna in Etelä-Savo in the summer of 2022.

A group of four young adults were traveling in a car owned by the accused on the last Saturday of July. According to the prosecutor, the accused was driving at a considerable speed and drove the car into an uncontrolled side skid, as a result of which the car crashed head-on into the signal post on the middle platform of the driving lanes.

The car broke into two parts due to the force of the collision. The rear part got caught in the sign post, and the front part was thrown about 20 meters away from it. Two of the men in the car died at the scene of the accident. The accused and the woman in the car were badly injured and taken to the hospital, where she later died.

According to the prosecutor, the accused man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident. Weather conditions were bad due to heavy rain and water accumulated on the roadway. In addition, the rear tires of the accused car were very worn winter tires from which the studs had been removed.

“The tread depth of the tires has been below the minimum depth of 1.6 mm stipulated in the Road Traffic Act. The car driven and owned by (the accused) has been removed from road use and banned from use due to lack of inspection,” the indictment says.

A man is charged with three counts of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated endangering traffic safety, drunk driving and the offense of drug use. In his written objection to the district court, he admits the drug charge, but denies the others.

The accused says that he does not remember anything about the accident or the events that preceded it, but denies that he was the driver.

“In hindsight, it is clear that (the accused) was in the car, but who was driving the car is unclear. (The accused) does not remember the events due to the injuries he received,” the answer says.

The prosecutor demands an unconditional prison sentence of around five years for the man. The South Savo district court will give its verdict later.
