The concept of zero emissions it is very dear to all companies that want to get in line with the environmental objectives set by national and continental governments. In the world of cars this is a very complicated result to achieve, because the production industry consumes a lot and, especially in the case of non-electric or renewable energy cars, continues to pollute even after the vehicle leaves the factory.
Then there are the companies that fully identify with state power: this is the case with Aramco, the oil company ofSaudi Arabia which has become a very visible sponsor in Formula 1 racing. The business is about black gold, there is no doubt: but what to do if the state decides to reduce its emissions. In this case, the problem is easily solved by setting objectives that are not too ambitious. In fact, according to the Saudi Green Initiative forum in Riyadh, Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman identified 2060 as the year in which the nation will reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Saudi Arabia is currently the world’s largest oil exporter. Obviously, a contradictory position in relation to all environmental initiatives, including the decision to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030, compared to 2020 levels. Moreover, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin H. Nasser recently said that “demonizing hydrocarbons is counterproductive“. From his point of view, there is no surprise in relation to this stance, given that oil is always in the forefront of investments to be made. However, it must be recognized that at present hydrocarbons are still necessary to maintain the lifestyle and economies of many countries, waiting for renewable energies to become predominant. Saudi Arabia will therefore continue to extract oil, and for a long time.
