The arrests involved the crown prince Muhammad bin Salman to an anti-corruption campaign where hundreds of people were interrogated on corruption charges.
Construction work was also delayed by concerns about the financial effects of the anti-corruption campaign and the coronavirus pandemic.
Construction in honor of the continuation, a ceremony was organized on Wednesday, which was attended, among others, by the crown prince’s cousin, the prince Alwaleed bin Talalwho is the chairman of one of the building’s financing companies.
He was also arrested as a result of the anti-corruption campaign. According to CNN, bin Talal was released after almost three months, but the reasons for his release remain unclear.
Chairman of Saudi Binlanden Group, the main developer of the skyscraper Bakr bin Laden was also one of those arrested. He is the half-brother of the founder of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda, who died in 2011 to Osama bin Laden. Bakr bin Laden’s family business has been hired to continue building the skyscraper.
The construction work is scheduled to be completed in 2028. When completed, Jeddah Tower will be the tallest building in the world. Now the first place is held by the 828-meter skyscraper Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
