Fenu the female flamingo that a fishing line had trapped at least ten days ago in the Marcedd ‘lagoon, in the Oristano area, did not make it. The volunteers of the Lipu of Oristano, who had laboriously managed to recover him after a long monitoring and a first failed attempt to free him, took him to the veterinary clinic ‘Duemari’ of the city: here the animal, baptized Fenu by those who tried to save his life, he died yesterday. A line had tangled from the legs to the flamingo’s neck, preventing it from feeding.
From the first sighting in the lagoon, on February 6, a LIPU volunteer monitored the bird’s condition, which then worsened to the point of forcing LIPU to attempt a first strenuous recovery, possible only by taking advantage of a moment of weakness in the flamingo.
But the operation, conducted on the evening of February 9, with a boat, failed: the animal went away, escaping its rescuers, and was only recovered on Wednesday, when it was lying motionless in the mud.
“Flamingos are the symbol of the wetlands of Oristano, everyone likes them, we find them on T-shirts, postcards, even in the signs of bars and pizzerias – underlines Gabriele Pinna of Lipu in Oristano -. But they often die trivially from an invisible nylon line used for fishing. In recent years we have recovered several times flamingos trapped by abandoned lines. Unfortunately, not always with success. And so it happened again this time ».
“This story has deeply marked us: we will never get used to the terrible consequences of reckless human behavior – adds Pinna -. The abandonment (sometimes unconscious) of nets and lines, sometimes with hooks, often causes the death of birds and other wild animals, such as small mammals or sea turtles ».
“Like Lipu Oristano, we have taken steps to report the phenomenon of the abandonment of lines and other tools similar to the Harbor Master’s Office, the Forestry Corps and the mayors – the volunteers regret -. We continue to report this type of event in all possible ways, but things do not seem to change ».
