To increase vaccination coverage for children aged 5 to 11, the government of São Paulo will promote a week of vaccination against covid-19 in schools in the state, between the 19th and 25th of February. The initiative will be carried out in public and private schools, but only in municipalities that join the campaign. The state government’s idea is that children are vaccinated during school hours, but cities will be responsible for defining the best immunization strategy.
So far, the state of São Paulo has vaccinated 2.4 million children in this age group, representing 60% of this population. For the coordinator of the São Paulo State Immunization Plan, Regiane de Paula, this number needs to grow even more.
There will be no need for parents or guardians to be present during vaccination in schools. They just need to sign a consent form.
The vaccines being administered to children are safe and have been approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). They mainly prevent people from developing severe forms of the disease.
According to the state secretary of Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, a study carried out at Hospital Emílio Ribas showed that 86% of people who died because of covid-19 had not taken any dose of the vaccine or completed the vaccination schedule.
This year, students from the São Paulo state education network will need present proof of vaccination against covid-19 or a medical certificate proving the contraindication for immunization. Those responsible must deliver the document during the second academic semester. According to a resolution of the Department of Education, unvaccinated students will not be prevented from attending classes. However, if the documentation is not presented within a maximum period of 60 days, the situation will be reported to the Guardianship Council, the Public Ministry and the health authorities “for appropriate measures”, says the resolution.
One of the articles of the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA) determines the mandatory vaccination of children in cases recommended by the health authorities.
Increase in deaths
Although cases of covid-19 and hospitalizations for the disease are falling in the state, deaths continue to grow. According to the Secretary of Health of São Paulo, a part of this increase is due to the delay in the insertion of data by the municipalities. Another part refers to patients who developed the severe form of the disease and were unable to survive.
The government of São Paulo warns people to continue avoiding agglomerations, especially during the carnival period, and to maintain non-pharmacological measures – such as the use of face masks and gel alcohol for hand hygiene.
The occupancy rate of beds in intensive care units (ICU) in the state of São Paulo is today at 64.5%, with 3,182 people hospitalized in a serious condition and another 4,797 people in wards.
