The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, sanctioned a bill (PL) that authorizes the municipal Executive Power to enter into agreements with the Cinemateca Brasileira. The project, authored by councilor Celso Giannazi, aims to assist in the maintenance and preservation of the institution’s collection.
From Law 17.694, of October 22, 2021 – the result of PL 368/2020 – the municipality will be able to transfer financial resources to the Cinemateca Brasileira and create a fund linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, whose objective would be to finance continuous actions for maintenance of the national acquis.
The Cinemateca’s collection is the largest in Latin America, with approximately 240 thousand rolls of film, 41 thousand different titles and 1 million non-filmic items (such as posters, scripts and others). At the end of July of this year, a fire reached the institution’s shed, where part of this collection was kept.
