Dhe EU countries have imposed sanctions on 54 other people and ten institutions for supporting Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. These include leading politicians from the United Russia party, which supports the Kremlin, propagandists of Vladimir Putin’s regime, oligarchs and their families, secret service officials and high-ranking military personnel. They are no longer allowed to travel to the European Union, and their assets there are frozen. The affected companies and organizations are no longer allowed to maintain business contacts with EU partners. A total of 1212 individuals and 108 institutions are now listed.
As can be seen from the new list, which was published in the EU Official Journal on Thursday evening, the “Night Wolves” motorcycle club, which is close to Putin, and four leading members are being sanctioned for the first time. The club is said to have about 45 branches around the world and promotes the idea that Ukraine should be an integral part of Russia. Along with Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, several foundations close to the Kremlin and military groups, the list also includes a Crimea-based company that transshipped grain stolen by Russia from Ukraine at the port of Sevastopol.
The most prominent politician on the list is Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, a close associate of Putin and a supporter of the war. Also listed are governors and mayors that Russia has installed in conquered territories and cities in southern Ukraine. Several Chechen and Russian commanders leading National Guard units deployed in Ukraine have also been included. Some of them were “involved in the killing, rape and torture of civilians in Bucha,” as the reasoning goes. The oligarchs and their relatives include the daughter of the CEO of Transneft, an energy company, who is said to own fifty million dollars worth of real estate in Moscow, Latvia and Croatia with her husband. Also listed is a cousin of oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who transferred significant assets to him.
