The Government will provide “offensive material” unilaterally, but rules out sending troops to the area
Spain takes an important step forward in its contribution to the Ukrainian defense against the Russian invasion. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Wednesday that he will deliver “offensive military material” directly, apart from what he already contributes through the European Union. This movement represents a turn in the position of the Executive, which until yesterday ruled out such involvement.
Sánchez appears this Wednesday at his own request before Congress to obtain the support of political groups for his plan for Ukraine. The socialist president faced the plenary session with the endorsement of his partners for his decision not to send weapons unilaterally and with the reproaches of the right –PP, Vox, Ciudadanos and PDeCAT– for not doing so. In his speech and surprisingly, he has announced his rectification just 24 hours after both he and the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, rejected that point.
“As I see that there are groups that question the Government’s commitment, I announce that Spain will deliver offensive military material to the Ukrainian resistance,” he assured from the rostrum. In any case, the president has ruled out that the Executive or NATO will send troops to the area.
