The PSOE leadership admits that it should open a “reflection” for the dismal results of 19-J but avoids self-criticism
The PSOE admits that it must make a calm analysis of what has happened in Andalusia but denies that there are reasons for “concern” in the face of the next general elections. The spokesman for the party’s executive, which this Monday held one of the longest meetings in recent years, Felip Sicilia, has assured that there has not been a single “critical” voice but there have been “continuous calls around to the need to open a reflection on why it has not been possible to mobilize the electorate».
At the moment, there is no outline of an answer beyond the affirmation that this lack of drive that has led the Andalusian PSOE to the worst result in its history -30 seats and 883,707 votes- has had nothing to do with the Executive of Pedro Sánchez and that his candidate, Juan Espadas, has “lacked time” to be able to explain his project, despite the fact that he was appointed in primaries a year ago, with the support of Ferraz. “The management of the Government is the best guarantee that we socialists have,” even Sicilia has defended.
The head of the Executive himself has sent a similar message to the PSOE leadership, according to his spokesman. “He has come to say that the Government is strong, solid, that there is a legislature until the end and that what he has to do is show that he is concerned about what worries the citizens, which is to solve the problems of this crisis caused by the Ukraine war,” he argued.
Sicilia also pointed in another direction that has little to do with the PSOE and argued that the division in the space to its left – the Por Andalucía coalition that has Yolanda Díaz as a reference and Teres Rodríguez’s Adelante Andalucía – has benefited the popular , who have been the ones who have taken the seats that settle and the remains (applied the distribution system of the D’hont law).
Unlike the deputy secretary general, Adriana Lastra, who last night did not even congratulate the winner for his results and blamed his result on the “huge resources” he has received from the Government of Spain to deal with the pandemic, Sicily has recognized victory of the popular leader. However, she has questioned whether it implies a reinforcement of the national PP. “If it has been the campaign in which the acronyms have been seen the least, they have barely allowed the national leaders to participate and Feijóo has only coincided in one act with Juanma Moreno,” he argued and alluded to the Andalusian popular’s strategy, very much in in tune with those deployed in Galicia by today’s leader of the main opposition party.
Nor do the socialists admit, at least not officially, that it was the popular ones who have stopped Vox, in part, thanks to Moreno’s ability to attract votes from the right, from Cs but also from abstention and the left, according to showed the polls prior to 19-J. “There has been no transfer, what there has been is a clear abstention,” he argued despite the fact that participation has been almost two points above 2018, when the Socialists obtained their previous worst result but won the elections.
If there is a concrete reaction to the catastrophe, something that has yet to be seen, it will not be local or quick. Sánchez is clear that he does not want an organic battle just two periods of parliamentary sessions from the next electoral cycle and has already sent clear messages that Juan Espadas must be kept at the head of the once powerful Andalusian federation. “Juan Espadas must launch a serious, responsible and constructive policy that responds to the interests of citizens and we are convinced that this work will lead us to recover the Government in the next elections,” Sicilia insisted.
The question remains in the air as to whether Sánchez will repeat the movement with which last year he tried to overcome the bump in the May 4 elections in the Community of Madrid, where his party had to accept another severe defeat, and will reshape his Government. In his environment they insist that he is the only one who has the answer to that question although the rumors about that scenario do not stop.
