The new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra looks more like the Galaxy Note than ever. In addition to a similar design, it incorporates a hole to store the S-Pen. The stylus that traditionally accompanied the Note makes this terminal a kind of digital notepad. The South Korean brand has also improved the quality of the screen and the performance of the cameras in low light environments. All these features make this flagship an expensive terminal; its price starts at 1,259 euros.
EL PAÍS has tested the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra for a few days. It is, above all, a large and heavy mobile. It measures 16.3 centimeters high, 7.7 wide and 8.9 millimeters thick and weighs 228 grams. Its rectangular design is quite reminiscent of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but, in this case, the rectangular camera module that grouped all the sensors disappears and these become integrated in isolation on its back. As they protrude slightly, the mobile wobbles when resting it on a smooth surface without a cover. Despite its dimensions, the terminal is comfortable in hand. Its back has a matte finish in which fingerprints are barely marked when using it.
The 6.8-inch screen stands out for its slight curvature on the sides and for its quality. In addition to looking great both indoors and outdoors in the sun, it has an adaptive refresh rate that reaches 120 Hz. This parameter refers to the number of times the screen is updated per second. Therefore, the higher it is, the more fluid the movements are, although it also consumes more battery. User can choose adaptive frequency up to 120Hz or 60Hz to extend battery life. By activating the first option, the viewing experience is fluid and smooth.
If there is something that differentiates the S22 Ultra from its predecessors, it is that it incorporates an S Pen for the first time. Although the S21 Ultra was already compatible with the stylus that traditionally accompanied the Galaxy Note, a specific case for the terminal was needed. Now, the S Pen is stored inside the mobile itself, in the lower left.
Although this stylus can serve to promote productivity, it is probably not an accessory that all users will benefit from. The S Pen can be used to take notes by hand and convert them to text, draw or translate words and phrases with a single tap. The Galaxy S22 Ultra uses artificial intelligence to predict hand movements and give the user an experience similar to writing on paper. The South Korean brand claims to have reduced the latency of the S Pen 9 to 2.8 milliseconds.
This accessory is also used to control the mobile with gestures without touching the screen as if it were a magic wand. It is enough to press on a button that it has on its side and make certain movements. For example, moving your hand to the left takes you back, and moving your hand up takes you back to the home screen. This system requires some training to learn the movements.
Cameras equipped with artificial intelligence
The S22 Ultra is Samsung’s most ambitious terminal in the photographic section. The brand intends to stand up to the flagships of giants such as Apple and Google. In addition to a 40-megapixel front-facing camera, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 108-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and two 10-megapixel telephoto lenses—one with a zoom 3x magnification lens and the other 10x magnification.
Samsung underlines its commitment to artificial intelligence to take photos and videos with a high level of detail both day and night. In general, clear captures are achieved with a good dynamic range. The cameras have improved quite a bit in low light environments. The mobile allows to make a zoom digital up to 100x, but, as with the S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra, if it is not used with a tripod or resting the mobile on a surface, it is difficult to get clear and usable photos.
The terminal is compatible with 5G networks and incorporates an Exynos 2200 processor. The user can choose between 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB of internal storage. This newspaper has tested the version with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The performance has been as expected from a high-end mobile, both when playing games and when making video calls or playing multimedia content. There has been no type of delay when running the applications.
The 5,000 mAh battery lasts a full day with normal use of the device. Although for most users it is more than enough, if the use that is given is very intensive, it may not reach the end of the day. The terminal has a fast charge of 45W —somewhat lower than that of several competing mobiles—. As happened with the S21, the new Samsung mobiles do not include the charger in the box. The South Korean brand followed in the footsteps of Apple last year alleging environmental reasons.
