“Sammy’s organs were donated to research, so that they can be used to advance the studies he was working on.” This was revealed in an interview with Corriere della Sera by the mother of 28-year-old researcher from Vicenza Sammy Basso, suffering from progeria, who died last October 5 after falling ill during dinner at a restaurant.
“It was a natural death, linked precisely to his rare pathology. Even if we didn’t expect it at all. When his friends called us to tell us that he had fallen ill, we couldn’t imagine that he would never wake up again,” Mrs. Laura Lucchin affectionately recalled. “I lived it day by day,” he added.
Lucchin explained that Sammy’s life expectancy was around 14 years but that at twelve he underwent an experiment that allowed him to reach 28. The lady then spoke of the great Catholic faith of her family, which Sammy also shared: “Sammy has made an important journey of faith. We are believers and from an early age we accompanied him in all the experiences of the Catholic Christian religion. Then at 12, when he started the experimental treatment, he had a crisis. This is because Sammy always believed that he was born with progeria because this was God’s plan for him and so he accepted it. Once the possibility of an experimental cure arose, we felt we were going against God’s will.” Sammy’s funeral will be held tomorrow, 11 October, at 3pm between the church and the Tezze sul Brenta sports field.
