Death Sammy Basso, his friend Riccardo: “He danced until the end”
New testimonies emerge on the death of Sammy Basso, the 28-year-old suffering from progeria, a rare disease that causes premature aging, who died in the night between 5 and 6 October.
The last moments of Sammy Basso’s life are told by Riccardo Zanolli, the 28-year-old’s former schoolmate and best friend, who was also present at the party where Sammy fell ill.
Interviewed by Corriere della SeraZanolli said: “We were together at that party, he had fun until the last moment.”
“Sammy never took himself seriously, I rarely saw him unhappy. He had fun until the last moment, just as he wanted his life to be,” the young man continues.
Riccardo Zanolli was with Sammy Basso on the coast to coast trip to the USA, which later became a book and a documentary: “Every day was a wonder, there were some moments of difficulty but the smile was never missing. On 5 October 2014 I returned to Italy, he stayed for a few days. Ten years later, on the evening of the 5th, his journey ended.”
The young man then tells how the 28-year-old was spending the evening before feeling ill: “He was dancing, he realized he wasn’t feeling well but he didn’t want to go home. The resistance to difficulties is what he has always had in life.”
“We met on the first day of high school, we were 14 years old. Then we found ourselves in Padua at the university: I was in engineering, he was in the faculties useful for research into the disease – says Zanolli – Until the last day he thought with plans towards the future. We were kids and he told me: I will go to university, I will graduate, I will study the disease.”
