He disappeared in the last few hours Sammy Bassothe most famous and longest-living progeria sufferer in the world. The man was struck by a sudden illness while he was in a restaurant. He had just returned from a recent trip to China.
The staff of‘Italian Progeria Association he became the spokesperson for the tragic news by spreading it on social media. An association founded by the young man himself in 2005 with the aim of making the disease better known to the public and promoting research.
In the note published by the Association we read the following:
“Today our light, our guide, has gone out. Thank you Sammy for letting us participate in this wonderful life. We gather around family and friends in respect of the pain in this delicate moment of mourning.”.
Sammy Basso: the incredible life
Sammy Basso was born in Schioa municipality in the province of Vicenza, on 1 December 1995. He obtained a degree in natural sciences with a molecular biological focusUniversity of Padua in July 2018 getting 110 cum laude. His thesis was dedicated to the search for therapies aimed at slowing down the progress of one’s pathology: the progeria.
It is an extremely rare genetic disease, characterized by accelerated aging that manifests itself early in childhood. Aging that does not alter the intellectual faculties of the affected person, but acts on skinthe bone and the cardiovascular system.
On 7 June 2019 he received the insignia of Knighthood of the Order of Merit of the Republic.
Sammy Basso was a travel enthusiast: he loved to travel the world. He was the protagonist of a docu-film for National Geographic titled “Sammy’s Journey” and turned along the Route 66in the USA, from Chicago to Los Angeles. A beautiful journey shared with his parents and one of his best friends, Richard.
