The secretary of the League Matteo Salvini
"The beauty and strength of the League has always been its compactness, its solidity and solidarity", declared Matteo Salvini at the workshop of the Lega's political school in Milan.
And in a granitic way, it also confirms the European line: absolute no to an approach to the EPP. Salvini explains it using irony: "It's not that I go in, I leave the EPP and the intercom as if it were a 'trick or treat' on Halloween".
And he reiterates: "The problem is not bringing the League into small groups that follow the left, because if we pursue the left politically and culturally we have lost". And if that weren't clear enough, he said: "We have to write the agenda". A position far from his number two which, even according to the most critics in the party, for now will adapt to the secretary.
"Giorgetti has always said: the League is one and the boss is Salvini. Full stop", says Bruno Vespa, present at the Milan workshop. But he adds: "Giorgetti is known to have a more favorable line to the EPP and Salvini to a conservative reassemblement".
Enrico Letta is not surprised either, who belittles the tug-of-war between the two leaguers as "a party game", convinced that "in the League it seems to me that the Salvini line has already won", confides the secretary of the Democratic Party. Antonio Tajani also downsizes the 'anti-European danger', who robs the League's progressive approach to the construction site for a new right-wing group in Europe, with the sovereign Orban and Morawiecki, as a "no problem for Forza Italia". For the FI coordinator, "Salvini no longer talks about leaving the euro and Europe and is already a step forward", he points out.
