“Did I asphalt Lilli Gruber? It was two against one but I think I had my say.” Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, responded to a user on his participation in Otto e mezzo in a live Facebook broadcast. The Northern League secretary was the protagonist of repeated back-and-forths with Lilli Gruber, presenter of the La7 broadcast, and Massimo Giannini, present in the studio.
“I wanted to reassure you, La7 is a network full of journalists who do their job seriously every single day by asking questions. Even for you politicians it is better that journalists are not kneeling in front of you, right?”, Gruber’s words in a passage of the broadcast. “Let’s say that in the League there is a factionalism from morning to night that I have never even seen in broadcasters in other countries. It’s my opinion. Then, fortunately, Italians mature their judgment regardless of what La7 says”, Salvini’s reply.
In the interview, we talk, among other things, about the position of the League and Italy towards the war in Ukraine. “The League will not vote on any decree for sending weapons to Ukraine if I am not certain that no Italian weapon will strike in Russia and will trigger the third world war. I don’t want even a bullet to hit Russia because we are not at war with Russia”, says Salvini. Do you fear a third world war? “Absolutely yes, someone is playing with fire”, he adds, defining the French president as “dangerous”. Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
Is Salvini with NATO or with Russia? “We are with NATO, we are for a defensive alliance. If Macron wants war, he puts on his helmet and goes to Ukraine, to Russia. Macron, not our children”, he says. “When Russia started the war, it was on the wrong side,” he adds, answering questions about his relationship with Russia and Putin. “Whoever starts a war is a criminal. Before the war, the whole world had to do with Putin. When Russia bombed Ukraine it was on the wrong side.”
