Despite his youth, the giant Victor Wembanyama continues to amaze NBA and marking new milestones in his career. Last night the Frenchman became the fourth youngest player to score 50 points in a game of the American Basketball League, in the 139-130 victory of the San Antonio Spurs against the Washington Wizards.
The first overall pick in last year’s draft accumulated this personal scoring record in just 26 minutes and finished the game with 18 of 29 shots and eight three-pointers, also a personal best.
The Spurs center, whose previous highest-scoring game was 40, couldn’t explain his incredible performance. “I’d love to tell you that you wake up a certain way or that you feel really calm during warmups, but at the end of the day, in the NBA we have a game every other day,” he explained.
The Wizards game was the third consecutive game in which Wembanyama scored six or more three-pointers.
The three players who managed to score 50 points in a game at a younger age than the Frenchman were Brandon Jennings, LeBron James and Devin Bookerall of them also in their 20s.
The Spurs won the game again without head coach Gregg Popovich. The team said Wednesday that he had suffered a minor stroke earlier this month, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Antetokounmpo is close to 60 points
Wembanyama wasn’t the only player to break the 50-point mark on Wednesday. Giannis Antetokounmpo He scored 59 in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 127-120 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Greek star made 21 of 34 shots and had 14 rebounds and seven assists in what was the highest performance by a player so far this season.
«As a leader, I keep reminding the guys not to take moments for granted. No matter who plays, we don’t give up and we always have to find ways to win the game,” explained the Greek.
