Salary agreement | The hospital boss was surprised by the recording: The employer may no longer prevent nurses from changing jobs with recruitment bans

According to Tarmo Martikainen, director of the Varsinais-Finland welfare region, the focus is now shifting from wages to what other means can be used to make the industry and jobs attractive.

In actual Finland we are relieved by the agreement reached on Monday evening regarding the nurses’ salary dispute.

“Certainly on both sides we are satisfied that an agreement has been reached”, says the director of the welfare region of Varsinais-Suomen Tarmo Martikainen.

“The main thing is the feeling of relief and the feeling that hey, now we can work together again.”

Situation according to Martikainen, it has been difficult for employers.

“And I believe that nurses and workers in the field have also raised expectations that it would be nice to get back to a normal work rhythm.”

The biggest relief is now that the normal running of the operation is simplified.

“Normal activities have been difficult and burdensome. We have had to think about how we can get the patients and customers taken care of and how the staff copes in general when we have to work with difficult arrangements.”

The nurses’ strike threatened to close the adult intensive care unit of Turku University Central Hospital (Tyks) in September. In September, the district court banned the start of strikes with a fine of one million euros.

I agree the solution that now led met Martikainen’s expectations. According to him, it reflects a willingness to compromise.

“There were quite a few text questions, which usually always come up. There were clearly a few different opinions about the salary increase level, depending on which side you look at.”

A text question related to the recruitment ban came as a surprise to Martikainen from the decision. It removes the employer’s ability to impose recruitment bans that have prevented caregivers from moving freely from one employment relationship to another.

Martikainen does not want to comment further on the text issue related to the recruitment ban.

I agree after birth, according to Martikainen, it is easier to start building a welfare area.

“The labor market situation raised a lot of issues that we need to improve in any case, related to management and working conditions, for example. We try to take those things into account.”

The most important thing now is to build a good workplace together, says Martikainen. The challenge is still whether there is enough staff.

“It is certainly good that the salary issue has now been fixed. Now the focus is on how good and interesting this field is and what kind of workplace we are, so that we have fun.”
