Brazil is definitely a special place for Carlos Sainz, who at Interlagos in 2019 won his first career podium in Formula 1. A particular third place, on that occasion, because he arrived after the penalty of Lewis Hamilton, who finished ahead of the Spaniard – at the time McLaren driver – under the checkered flag. The seven-time British world champion has this year found in Max Verstappen – Sainz’s first boxing mate, at the time of Toro Rosso – an apparently unsurpassed opponent on the road to his eighth career title. The Stevenage champion arrived in Sao Paulo with 19 points to recover over the Dutchman. A possible third consecutive victory of # 33 would perhaps decisively direct the title race.
Sainz, who knows the Red Bull environment well having grown up in the Austrian team’s young driver program, warned the Milton Keynes team during the press conference in Brazil. When asked about the world championship duel, the Ferrari driver did not go too far, underlining how – despite the last difficult races – the Mercedes is still fully on track for success. “I think that [la battaglia] is still close – said the driver from Madrid – and I believe that a possible withdrawal can change the whole picture“.
“I also believe that Mercedes has not said the last word – Sainz added in conclusion – I think that they will come back strong after some tough weekends. Red Bull appears to have a stronger package. But Mercedes and Lewis always remain Mercedes and Lewis, so we’ll see “.
