The aftermath of penalty/non-penalty of Miami continue to populate the paddock in Imola too. Precisely at Santerno the drivers will discuss possible tightening of sanctions in cases of extreme defensive tactics, but the logic with which the stewards condemn or acquit is still unclear to many.
It is the case of Carlos Sainzwho found himself penalized five seconds in Florida for overtaking – with contact – Piastri after Sergio Perez had instead been pardoned for a crazy assault at the start of the first corner: in this last case there were fortunately no contacts, but the race of the two Ferraris was somewhat complicated by the Mexican’s maneuver.
“In Miami at the first corner I arrived second and, to avoid Pérez, I came out fourth: this changed the whole race. Sometimes I just don’t understand everything the FIA doesbecause that maneuver cost us the race – says Sainz – Pérez clearly arrived uncontrolled, but had no contact with anyone and took no penalties. For me, that overtaking, that wrong braking, was much worse than what I did later in the race, but one gets penalties and the other doesn’t.”
“Another thing that isn’t great for Formula 1 is that I found out three hours after the race. I was confident when the commissioners listened to us (Sainz and Piastri, ed.). They were very calm and agreed with me, so I left convinced that I would not get any penalties. Taking the five seconds therefore surprised me and, like I said, there are times I just don’t understand.”
