Unexpected, but therefore more beautiful. The first pole position in his career for Carlos Sainz, arrived at the 150th GP of the Spanish rider, today was not planned. The Iberian driver himself, in the car, was not convinced that he had scored a lap capable of beating both Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. His immediate disbelief, expressed via radio, was however counterbalanced by the awareness shown with a cold mind in front of journalists. Speaking to the microphones of Sky Sport F1 in fact, the # 55 of Ferrari analyzed in detail the lap that earned him the starting pole in tomorrow’s grid, recognizing it as his driving cleaning probably made a difference to the overly aggressive style of his teammate and the world championship leader.
“The conditions were so difficult on the track that the lap felt very strange to me. I also missed the battery – revealed Sainz – I finished it before turn 15. The lap had to be clean and that’s why I couldn’t push hard, but sometimes in these conditions you need to take the edge and do ‘only’ a clean lap, because everyone makes mistakes. In the end it was a good lap that gave me pole. At the end of Q3 it was also starting to rain, so we all started to struggle. The conditions were the most difficult possible, because the track was not perfectly ready for the intermediate tires“.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, Sainz can smile. The dream is to combine the first pole with the first victory. The optimism is given by the pace shown by the F1-75, which is competitive in both dry and wet conditions: “This weekend I was fast even in the dry and it’s not like I wanted rain. I always went fast in the wet – added Sainz again – but in F1 there is such a high level of drivers that even in the wet it is difficult to make a difference. The important thing is that this weekend I went very fast in both dry and wet conditions. Victory? If we have the PL2 step, it can be done. We’ll see if Max has improved as much as he demonstrated in PL3. Here there are always fun competitions “he concluded.
