Sainz and the choice for 2025
“Nobody likes to be dumped“. So Carlos Sainz he returned to Ferrari’s choice to sacrifice him in the name of Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season. A season that will be crucial for the Spaniard, not so much for the results on the track (he will go to an uncompetitive team, unless the market changes at the moment unlikely) as for 2026.
Sainz, theoretically, doesn’t want to speed up the process. If the prospects are Williams and Sauber/Audi, for which the driver has due respect, it makes sense to wait for the unexpected market event (read: separation between Max Verstappen and Red Bull or Toto Wolff’s rethinking of Mercedes’ plans). On the other hand, it is true that the market can be a distraction and a burden that it is understandable to want to free yourself from.
Sainz’s words
One thing is clear: Sainz is such an unrepeatable opportunity for the second/third tier teams that the latter are willing to wait months for the Ferrari driver’s decision: everyone (Williams, Sauber/Audi, Haas, RB, Alpine and perhaps even Aston Martin) have made an offer to Smooth Operator, who now only has to decide between the alternatives. Sainz himself admitted it in the broadcast El Hormiguero of Spanish TV Antenna 3.
“I have several options, I will decide very soon because I want to take my mind off it and concentrate on the rest of the championship with Ferrari. This year I have the car to win races and get on the podium, so I want to focus on the present, then there will be time to think about 2025. Williams? As mentioned, I have several options, basically they are on the list of every team that still has an open seat for next year. I could sign tomorrow, but I won’t because I want to take it easier. And Williams can be an option for me”.
