Double retreat
Carlos Sainz completes an absolute nightmare weekend for Ferrari in Montreal and must join Charles Leclerc: double retirement for the two red single-seaters in the 2024 Canadian GP, a thunderous and certainly unexpected flop after the triumph in Monaco.
Sainz’s Canadian race was contested in complete anonymity, with the Iberian driver almost always remaining outside the points zone. He was returning precisely in the phase of the race that preceded his retirement, which arrived due to his driving error, as he honestly admitted on the radio.
Albon ‘collateral’ victim
On lap 54 of 70, Sainz pinched the curb in the ‘S’ of turns 8-9, losing control of his SF-24 and spinning. In the spin, car #55 also ‘overwhelmed’ the unfortunate Williams of Alex Albon, who was behind him and had been running a splendid race up to that point.
The retirement for the Thai was immediate while Sainz – who also apologized via radio for the accident caused – then continued to the pit lane, before putting his red car in the garage. For Maranello, this is the first double knockout in over two years: the last occurred in the 2022 Azerbaijan GP.
