The curtain opens on the XVII edition of Formula SAE Italy, the educational event scheduled from 13 to 17 July which involves university students from the worldwide engineering faculties in an international technical-sporting challenge.
The event, organized by ANFIA, returns this year to the face-to-face format, with the appropriate anti-covid measures, after the hybrid edition – online and face-to-face – tested in 2021 due to the difficulties linked to the pandemic emergency and will take place at the “R. Paletti” racetrack in Varano de ‘Melegari (Parma) – partner of the initiative together with SAE International – with the main sponsorship of Alten and with the media partnership of Motorsport.com and Motor1.com and Auto Tecnica.
In the “five days” approximately 1,700 students from 20 different countries and 58 different universities will gather in the heart of the Emilian motor valley, representing 67 university teams – of which 57 from the European Union (20 Italians, coming from 15 different universities) and 10 extra-Europeans.

Formula SAE was born in 1981 on the initiative of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and provides that the participating students measure themselves in the design and construction of a single-seater racing prototype car intended for possible commercialization, following particular technical and economic constraints. as if it were commissioned by an automotive company for a non-professional user.
During the event, the student teams face static tests – Design Event, Business Presentation Event and Cost Event – and dynamic tests on the track (Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, Endurance; for the 1D Class Autocross and Endurance they are replaced by the Trackdrive test ).
The aim of the event is to focus on the skills matured by the students in terms of engineering knowledge, commitment, organization and respect of deadlines, coordination of the design and presentation of the product, rather than competition itself.

It is an educational event in which children can learn the dynamics of team work, with precise rules and deadlines to be respected, and be tested on the real construction and design phases of the prototype, with all the difficulties that this entails.
The opening ceremony of the kermesse is scheduled for Wednesday 13 July at 9.00 pm on the track straight. After the welcome greetings to the teams, the ceremony will see the participation of ANFIA Motorsport Section Coordinator Massimiliano Marsiaj, Federico Criscuoli, Alten Coach Business Manager and Giampaolo Dallara, President of Dallara Group.
The event will end on the evening of Sunday 17 July with a closing ceremony always on the finish straight of the circuit, in which all the boys will participate and during which the winners will be awarded.
There are awards for numerous categories, divided by classes (Combustion, Electric, Driverless or projects without prototype) and by type of test.

This year ANFIA will assign for the first time the “Type-approve your FSAE Italy car” award – reserved for Italian teams – to the team member who has presented the best written document describing the European legislation for the approval of motor vehicles, in its most relevant parts, imagining to homologate their specific Formula SAE car for road circulation and thus indicating the main constraints it should comply with.
The delivery of the document gives students the opportunity to access the selection process for an extracurricular internship at the Technical and Regulatory Affairs Area of ANFIA.
Among the special prizes awarded by the sponsors, the prize for the best cost-efficient car offered by Dallara Group and the “Know-how, Agility and Problem Solving” prize awarded by Erre Technology Group.

Finally, Teoresi Group will award a prize to the team with the best electronics development process (innovative controls, methods and architectures).
The following will be on display at the racetrack: the Battista electric hypercar by Automobili Pininfarina, of which Danisi Engineering Srl is an engineering and development partner; an electric racing hydroplane by eDriveLAB; the Nissan GT-R 50 by Italdesign; the SCG 007 by Podium Advanced Technologies.
The event will also include collateral initiatives and moments of entertainment designed for students, such as the Welcome party on Wednesday 13 July in the upper paddock of the Varano circuit.
