The German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, world champion as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990, died on Sunday at the age of 78, the F announced this MondayGerman federation (DFB).

His career
Beckenbauer was born in Munich on September 11, 1945 and was always known as 'The Kaiser'.
He was an outstanding footballer and coach, one of the best players in all of history, not only in Germany, but in the world.
He won two Ballon d'Or awards (1972 and 1976), becoming the first central defender to win that award. Until the last days of his life, Beckenbauer served as honorary president of Bayern Munich.
With that team he won the European Cup Winners' Cup (1966/1967), three European Cups (1973/1974, 1974/1975 and 1975/1976) and an Intercontinental Cup (1976).
Likewise, he was key in the four Bundesliga titles he won (1969, 1972, 1973 and 1974). In addition, he won four German Cups (1966, 1967, 1969 and 1971).
In recent years he had been retired from public life due to health problems and also due to the scandal unleashed by alleged irregularities in his work to obtain the headquarters of the 2006 World Cup.
With the German team he played 103 games and was part of the group that played in the World Cups three times and two European Championships.
He is one of the three men, along with the Brazilian Mario Zagallowho died last Friday, and the French Didier Deschampswho have won the World Cup as a player and as a coach.
