Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open tennis title after defeating sixth-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the women’s singles final.
Sabalenka withstood the raucous cheers from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd in support of Pegula and broke her opponent’s serve in the final game to clinch her first Flushing Meadows title.
One year after losing the final of the previous edition of the tournament to American Coco Gauff, Sabalenka succeeded in compensating for her deficit in both sets, to achieve victory in the end, and she threw herself on the court at the moment of victory.
Pegula, 30, had to wait a long time to reach her first Grand Slam final, but she couldn’t match the strength of her opponent, despite the huge support the American player received from her home fans in New York.
Second seed Sabalenka won her third Grand Slam title, having previously won the Australian Open twice.
