D.he North Rhine-Westphalian State Chancellery has denied the authenticity of an interview with the CDU candidate for Chancellor Armin Laschet, which appeared in the European edition of the Turkish newspaper “Sabah”. “There was never an interview,” said the Düsseldorf State Chancellery on Thursday at the request of the German Press Agency.
The alleged interview with Laschet appeared in the European edition of “Sabah” at the end of July. Laschet was quoted in it with the statement “I have a great love for Turkey”.
According to “Sabah”, the interview comes from the external author Faruk Sen. The interview was taken from his website (brandday.net), said the German boss of “Sabah”, Ismail Erel, to the dpa. Sen had assured them that he had phoned Laschet and that the interview was real.
“That has nothing to do with us in that sense,” said Erel. “We took over the interview with Faruk Sen’s permission.” Sen, in turn, stated that the matter had been clarified with the State Chancellery and that he did not want to comment in detail. The interview has since been taken from Sens’s side.
Sen is the former director of the Center for Turkish Studies in Essen. He had given up his office after a controversial equation of Jews and Turks.
